Jürgen Berlakovich

FichteFor guitar and DNA-driven electronics

Jürgen Berlakovich works with a specially developed sonification software that translates DNA sequences into sound and music on the basis of a genetic system.

The composition “Fichte” combines elements of ancient music with electronic sound textures generated from DNA sequences of spruce wood – the wood of many stringed instruments.

Geschiebe builds on the site-specific work Transceiver by Stefan Voglsinger (Mamka Records, MAM07, 2024), where the recording process oscillated between electro-acoustic sound research and outdoor re-amping. Recordings were played back through transducers onto resonators, stimulating the natural resonances of the objects and their environment. Geschiebe expands this technique with live instrumentation and electronics that merge these external sound spaces and bring them onto the stage. Composed atmospheres intertwine with field-recording textures, transformed through resonant spaces and complemented by improvised passages. In this live recording session Valentin Duit, Simon Berz, Kasho Chualan, Aras L. Seyhan and Stefan Voglsinger perform with new field-recording material from Latin America and Asia, marking their first encounter within shifting constellations.

CV

Jürgen Berlakovich *1970 is an author, musician and soundartist. He writes, composes and produces novels, essays, film music, radio plays, podcasts, audiocartoons, soundscapes and songs. He uses DNA sonifications and linguistic microparticles in combination with guitar, bass and electronics for compositions and improvisations. He runs the JSB Trio, is an ensemble member of The Vegetable Orchestra and was the co-initiator of the literature and music performance duo Sergej Mohntau. Berlakovich studied german literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna. He developed the concept of Acoustic Poetics and currently teaches it at the ‘sfd-schule für dichtung’ in Vienna and the ‘Escuela de Escritores’ in Madrid.  www.berlakovich.org

Kasho Chualan is a Kurdish-Canadian pianist, composer, and sound artist based in Vienna. Her work explores the emotional and physical textures of sound by breaking boundaries through performance and experimental improvisation. Influenced by political unrest, human suffering, and the intrigue of melancholy and nature, she uses prepared piano, electronics, toys, and everyday objects to challenge traditional ways instruments are played.

Simon Berz is a transdisciplinary drummer sound artist, and music educator based in Swizerland and Berlin. Working at the intersection of improvised music, sound art, and performance, and deliberately crossing boundaries between disciplines, his aesthetics are shaped by a sustained engagement with natural materials, particularly stone, and their sonic transformation through electronic manipulation.

Aras Levni Seyhan, studied “Computer Music and Electronic Media” at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He is a musician, producer, mixing engineer, promoter, and co-founder of the Vienna-based artist collective and music label WELL GEDACHT, which is responsible for events, concert series, and eclectic releases.

Valentin Duit, born in 1992, studied in Lucerne and his hometown Vienna, where he made a name for himself in various young bands in the field of jazz and improvised music—and beyond—including the Trio Dsilton, the Christopher Pawluk Quartet, the formations of saxophonist Robert Unterköfler, and many more. As a bandleader, Duit has performed with his quartet and the quintet Trabanten. However, his highly successful drum solo EP “Mashevene” (2018) attracted particular attention, in which Duit clearly developed economical sound structures and, precisely in their reduction, made an astonishing variety of colors and nuances audible.

Stefan Voglsinger is a musician and performer based in Vienna. He improvises with sine waves and noise generators sent through resonators. He uses open-source instruments for live sampling and fuses them with filtered field recordings from his travels around the world. Voglsinger works across disciplines, developing performances and audiovisual installations with self-built and hacked electronic circuits. He deconstructs machines and instruments and improvises with various groups in Vienna and abroad.
