Matija SCHELLANDER – Kontrabass
NOID – Cello

performance for voice, violin, sound effects, sampler, electronics and synth

MATIJA SCHELLANDER is an Austrian composer and improvising musician currently based in Vienna, mostly using double bass, modular synthesizer, and speakers: processing input, moving air output.

In 2012 his solo CD “sum šum” with 7 electroacoustic composition will be released by the small publishing office The Manual (Seoul).

Schellanders current double bass solo project is a three-part performance that incorporates space, movement, light and sound. Conceptual on one hand, it never dismisses the non-rational, sensual communicational possibility intrinsic in music.

Schellander regularly works with Rdeča Raketa (electracoustic duo with Maja Osojnik) and in duos with Enrico Malatesta (percussion / double bass) and Franz Hautzinger (quartertone trumpet / modular synthesizer) as well as the ensemble Low Frequency Orchestra (Castello/Grill/Osojnik/Schellander).
Other collaborations include Okkyung Lee, Burkhard Stangl, Anja Utler, Isabelle Duthoit, Michael Thieke, Hannes Lingens, Klaus Filip, Choi Joonyong, Metalycée, Andrea Neumann, Katharina Klement, Chris Heenan, Olaf Hochherz, Lukas König, Daniel Riegler, Dieb13, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Ryu Hankil, Christof Kurzmann, Jin Sangtae, Jorge Sanchez-Chiong, Noid, Bernhard Lang…

NOID /AKA ARNOLD HABERL, *1970, living in vienna
composer . performer . improviser I auricular . cello . electronic devices

his musical approach can be described as fundamental research.
his works span a wide range of contradictory outcome, from solos to compositions for ensembles, from sound installations to videos.
using electronics as well as acoustical instruments.
consequently denying the borderline between music and sound-art.

this lead him to collaborations with artists of different fields:
choreographers, like joão fiadeiro, colette sadler, akemi takeya, philipp gehmacher, etc…
visual artists as for instance alexander schellow, heike kaltenbrunner, erik hable or andré goncalves.

as an improvisor he performs among others with: klaus filip, taku unami, o.blaat, axel doerner, christian weber, erikM, dieb13, kazuhisa uchihashi, burkhard stangl, yan jun, taku han-noda, carl stone, mattin, etc…

he is programmer for the “ppooll” project: an open source / copyleft / freeware, designed for live – improvisation, composition, interactive installations, etc…
together with klaus fillip (the main programmer) he was invited to present this software at the cycling74 user conference in san francisco april 2009.

he is part of the organizing team for the annual “reheat” interdisciplinary festival, and he was curating soundart exhibitions in the frame of the “konfrontationen nickelsdorf” festival in 2009 and 2010.

Part history and part possibility, Book & Decker deploy Phaedra as a divining tool to denature the song cycle by way of voluptuous frictions between the chill of stasis and white hot freedom.

Transmedia and vocal artist Lynn Book in collaboration with electronic musician and sound artist Shawn Decker deploy Phaedra as a divining tool to denature the song cycle by way of voluptuous frictions between release and containment, stasis and white hot freedom. Part history and part possibility, Phaedra is both a mythical figure and a contemporary sign of escape. The artists spring her from a Baroque opera where she migrated from Racine’s stage, having threaded through centuries of story, including conflicting fragments that Euripides wrote, lost, then wrote again in ancient Greece. Phaedra becomes the ideal escape body for our time, resonant with multiple histories and radiant with propositions for possible futures.

“Last evening I found your work to be like a profile of negative space.”

Paul Shullenberger, on the preview of The Phaedra Escapes /2012 Outer Ear Festival, Experimental Sound Studio, Chicago/USA
